meM-INC: Acquisition of pulses and frequencies at the PC

With the digital system for incremental encoders meM-INC from BMC Messsysteme GmbH (bmcm), signal pulses can be counted and frequencies measured via the USB interface.

Incremental encoders convert linear or rotating position changes into a digital signal. They are used as sensors for distance and angular measurements. Basically, their working principle consists in periodically arranged segments on a measuring stick or a disc producing electrical pulses during motion. The actual position is determined by the number of increments passed.

Supercomputer fastest of its type in world

A supercomputer named Novo-G described by its lead designer as likely the most powerful computer of its kind in the world became operational this week at the University of Florida.
Novo-G gets the first part of its name from the Latin term for “make anew, change, alter,” and the second from “G” for “genesis.” A “reconfigurable” computer, it can rearrange its internal circuitry to suit the task at hand.
Applications range from space satellites to research supercomputers — anywhere size, energy and high speed are important, said Alan George, professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of UF’s National Science Foundation Center for High-Performance Reconfigurable Computing.

Canon Inc. announced today the development of Hybrid Image Stabilizer (IS), the world’s first* optical image stabilization technology that compensates for both angle camera shake and shift camera shake. The technology will be featured in interchangeable single lens reflex (SLR) camera lens planned for commercial release before the end of 2009.
